Make sure there is no socks server in your socks.cfg file as bogus socks servers will cause this condition though the same thing should have happened with your initial lan connection if that was the case.  What are you using to get the connection over wifi?  Are you changing mpts?  Using the wxlan?  Scripts?  It really sounds like some sort of firewall thing which is why my first question was the socks file.  I would try telnet and ftp.  Maybe telnet to one of the web servers on port 80.
Also I would ping a web server and use the ip in the browser to see if there is any difference.
