For WiFi hardware, while I am partial to the Cisco 350 PC Card, Stan's suggestion is a good one, if only for readily available driver support. You are also correct that changing hardware later is no major financial problem, as most cards have come down to reasonable levels, especially on the used market. The Cisco 350 has much greater output power and a better antenna (I'm referring to the model with the internal antenna, not external) than the Prism-based IBM cards. I have both, and have observed the difference in throughput. The Cisco is definitely the better card. That said, when it comes to openly-available and supported drivers, the IBM is a better choice. We have - at this point - no idea when or if the Cisco driver will be made (fully) public, whether it will be "upgraded," to properly support even WEP, and whether it will be supported by the developer or IBM or Serenity. I can't speak to experience with cards beyond the ones I've mentioned and the earlier LinkSys (v1, v2, v2.5) models (the LinkSys were all terribly inferior, IMO). On the Win32 platform, I've worked with Broadcom-based cards, and these, while powerful, were quite problematic to configure.
