They're probably using a captive portal. Did you try opening a browser and
attempt to access a web page? You should probably get the portal page where
you enter the credentials they provided. That should get you out (with the
ability to ping, traceroute, POP3, SMTP, etc.).

Good news about the last problem (meaning, good news it wasn't an OS/2
driver issue).
