Hi, Mark. I'd be willing to take a crack at it (after Warpstock!) to see if the Qualcomm-based card from Verizon can be accessed using the standard OS/2 USB modem driver. Funny; I think you actually got two correct answers from the crew at Verizon: on the one hand, the driver for the PCMCIA card may be "Windows-only," while on the other, the modem driver may be completely generic (e.g., serial emulation only). I think the challenge from the OS/2 side would be to get the card recognized as a PCMCIA USB device. Once that part of the hurdle is over, getting the serial ports visible should be a much simpler affair.

All of the above said, I have had absolutely no experience with this hardware whatsoever. In fact, ironically, the only platform on which I've had any cellular data experience is PalmOS, and there, only as a user, not a hacker.

On 09/06/2004 03:51 pm, Mark Abramowitz thus wrote :

I want to be able to access the internet from my laptop on the road, using
my wireless provider.  Currently, I'm with Nextel, but they tell me
"Windows only", and so does the the Motorola website, which makes their
PCMCIA card.

I may switch to Verizon - 1 person at a Verizon store told me Windows
only, another said no proprietary software required.

The PCMCIA card I would use under Verizon is an AirPrime 5220.  I found
some information about the ability to use it under Linux at http://www.ka9q.net/5220.html.

Has anyone had any success with wireless internet under OS/2 or
eComstation?  If not, anyone have any informed opinions as to whether or
not I can get this to work under Verizon?  I'm willing to make some
effort, but don't have a lot of expertise.

TIA.
