The reviews on the Kensington gizmo were abysmal. There's a new unit out which does much better, though the name escapes me now (check over at liwirefree.org; I think I may have blogged it).
However, as Neil has pointed out, using WiFiState configured for dynamic mode, you usually pick up available SSIDs.
Last October, following Warpstock, I went to the nearby ISP convention. From the exhibit hall there were literally dozens of SSIDs floating around, and my machine kept hopping from one to another. I finally settled on one with a good signal, set the SSID in WiFiState, and stuck with it.
