Again, in the interest of keeping an eye on the objective:

*  I resolved the large number of files and large sizes by
   creating a ZIP at the root level.
*  This has a side advantage of providing a backup of what
   is moved from one system to the other.  I also wrote the
   ZIPs to CDs for offsite archiving.

I couldn't agree more.  I would add 'easy' to your 'standard'
requirement.
