My son came home with his IMAC a few weeks ago, which he uses to connect to his schools wireless network. When he came home, his IMAC found my
network and connected. How it know?

Wireless networks announce their presence. You network is not secured properly if someone can just connect to it without knowing a password.

What are the features / programs / configuration that allows this to happen?

Depends on your WAP. You should read the documentation. Also see
