This is also the way that the older IBM network access software used to work with Connection Manager/2. A .cmd file to swap setups, followed by a reboot.

I used to do lots of things this way, but there are - as with most everything in life - some drawbacks. If you forget to run the .cmd file before a reboot, you need to go through a whole other boot cycle, for instance. For many of us, multiple CONFIGs are the most convenient. Also, should you find that a certain protocol build works better with one card as opposed to another, you could pair up the "best fitting" combination for each card.

Of course, the best thing about this whole subject is that with OS/2, we have several different ways of achieving the same objective, which is more than can be said for many other OSes!

Hi folks,

Just a little more detail on how I switch the protocol.ini files, which
I think is a little simpler than having to maintain 2 config.sys's...

I have both drivers in config.sys at the same time.  That hasn't caused me
any problems at all, so config.sys doesn't need to change.  (The cards I'm
using are a 10baseT 3Com 3CXE589DT and the IBM High Speed Wireless card.)

I have static copies of the different protocol.ini files, each under another
name (for example, Protocol_3CXE589DT.ini and
Protocol_IBM_High_Rate_Wireless.ini), and a simple .cmd file to for each one
to copy it over the current protocol.ini (for example, Switch_to_3CXE589DT.CMD
and so on).  To make it really easy, I've created icons in System Setup in
a folder I called Switch Net Configuration.  These are called "Switch to ..."
(the appropriate name) and each runs the .cmd file to copy over the file.
It just takes a couple of clicks to change the setup... but of course it sill
does require a reboot.
