I am sorry to jump in late, but I can hibernate to a file that is on a
HPFS partition.
I have a TP 600 and use the OS/2 Tool from IBM to enable hibernation. It
will ask me for a drive letter and I assigned my "C" Drive. (which
happens to be HPFS and below the 1023 cylinder mark...) It is also my
boot drive for OS/2...
