My pleasure.  ;-)

You know, ten years ago, I'd have agreed that integrated components could be cause for concern. However, we need to remember a couple things (obviously, this guy has no clue):

   * Today, almost all machines have integarted hardware. The newer
chipsets support audio and video internally, and desktop machines
include embedded LAN, USB, IDE, floppy, SCSI (in some cases),
FireWire, etc. How many add-on boards are required anymore? 99% of
all workstations we deploy have 3 or 4 PCI slots, a vacant AGP
slot, and that funky little ACP slot on the end for a
half-brain-dead Win modem to plug in. All of these slots are
empty, because the essentials are onboard.
   * Notebooks, by there very nature, are integrated devices. If your
display panel fails, luckily you have an external port to plug in
a supplemental monitor. However, in most cases, it's not feasible
to run the machine with the display panel disconnected and removed
for service, so the whole unit goes out. Ditto for any of the
ports failing (end users can't very well desolder the UART, put
the machine back together, use it until they find a replacement
chip, and then open it up again to solder it into place - I've
done it, but that doesn't count...).

The only real drawback I see to the miniPCI is that there's only one slot (unless the T40's will have two). In mine, I have an Intel LAN/modem combo card. I guess if the new ones will ship with a wired/wireless combo, that would work (the Winmodem circuitry is for the birds, anyway; my trusty Megahertz 56K blows it away under all OSes I've run). There's also a lot to be said about not having that funny "ear" sticking out of the side of the machine (the wireless antenna). One of these days, I swear I'm going to snap the thing off!

Lewis, > For wireless, I believe the antenna  > connector plugs in I figured this would be the way these adapters worked, also thinking the connectors may be something like internal slip-in batteries with a push
fit,  or something. Some dude on a CIS Comm forum was dis'ing the concept
of having  the wireless components integrated on the m/b in the event of
failure implying  you'd have to return the m/b for service. I suggested
that in the interim you  could always use a PCMCIA wireless adapter until
you found a temporary  replacement and then send in your unit, but.... Anyway, thanks for the tutorial. <G> Charles [13:22 CT, 25-Mar-03]  =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
