You don't want automotive lead acid - they vent hydrogen and tend to splatter -
every one I've seen has corroded the inside of the enclosure. The vented
hydrogen can also be an unpleasant bomb in a closed area like the inside of
equipment. What you need is a "sealed lead acid" although even that name is
misleading as the majority of those are actually gell (cells with a gelled acid
solution) which makes them spill proof. These are also rated for extended or
trickle charge without damage to the battery - important as nearly all UPS
batteries are seldom discharged compared to the time they spend waiting with
just a trickle charge.
