Yes, you are... ;-) The way Jeff described his setup, only the WAN port of the WRT54G was connected to his LAN (not the outside). Thus, to the WRT54G, connecting from the real LAN (not one of the four ports on the device itself) would appear to be coming form the internet and connecting to its WAN port.
