The switch is indeed on, and it works in XP with or without encryption and
on eCS without encryption.

The 3945 does indeed do WPA and WPA2. My experience, however, has shown that you will have the best luck using WPA2 Personal (or PSK) Mixed on the router with TKIP+AES (this allows either or both options to be used). If you don;t have the option of "mixed" (see below), then opt for WPA.

I've still not found a combination that works in eCS.  I'll go back to XP
in another day or two and find out which combinations work there and post
the results.

I'm not sure I'm ready to flash with DD-WRT - I'm scared of bricking it:-(

You only live once!! Might as well live on the edge... :-D

I was at a client in Virginia with a new WRT54G v8 (lousy model, BTW; quite quirky). I had to flash it with DD-WRT in order to get it to do what I needed (I didn't supply the router, either). I thought for a few minutes that I really had bricked it, too.... However, I just turned it off and let it sit for about ten minutes, powered it back up, and there it was. All in all, a very nice surprise.

That's not to say that I haven't bricked my share of these boxes, of course... :-)

I don't have one handy with factory firmware in it right now, or I'd volunteer to test a few combinations. If I get my hands on one, though, I'll let you know.
