Yes, this is a good idea when the MAC isn't properly reported. In my experience, this is a driver issue. What Win driver version are you using in the wrapper directory? Have you perhaps tried updating it to a newer one or back-reving?

Not Win -  this is with the zapped OS/2 EL90X driver.

The GenMAC wrapper directory contains a Win driver, which would be the one I thought was zapped. That said, from your previous post, it appears that you are running the older GenMAC 2.00 and not the "current" 2.00, which does not list the 3C556 in its compatibility matrix. This makes troubleshooting a bit harder, as I'm not at all familiar with the older style setup.

What makes you think that? I got it from netlabs this week. I also
tried the card this afternoon from win2000 - works perfectly at 100Mbs
- of course :-(

The VOICE article you quoted was released in 2004. There was no GenMAC 2.00 - as we have it today - in 2004. The current list of supported 10B7 (3Com manufactured) devices for GenMAC 2.00 (from the docs) is:

3Com 3C90xC   PCI [10B7:9200]
3Com/SKNet Gigabit [10B7:1700]

Do you have a wrapper directory under genmac\driver entitled WRAPPER_10B7_6056? That's where the current GenMAC builds would put the Windows files.

Who do I need to contact to find out why it got dropped - that VOICE
announcement seems clear enough - and can we get it back given I have a
set of the latest win drivers now.

I would send a note to the GenMAC support list: genmac-user@netlabs.org with the PCI ID and the Winbdows INF and SYS files.

If the card is working as it should under Windows, then the duplex issue is not a factor, and it is indeed properly handling the auto negotiation (which is a good thing). In that case, an update to GenMAC to support the current Windows driver should do the trick (assuming the problem is at the driver level, at least).
