Hello all: It works! Apparently, all that I needed to do was after phase 3 of the installation, click on MTPS, click on Configure, click on OK, and click on Save - nothing more than that, no actual change is necessary. During the process MPTS told me that all was properly configured (!), but apparently the configuration was never before Saved. After rebooting wireless works as it should with my T40. (As an aside, with my thinkpad A31p the above extra steps were not needed; wireless worked upon finishing the "easy installation".) Now I am trying to clean up config.sys, based on Lewis' suggestions. Many thanks to all who responded! This community is simply wonderful.
