You are not in the minority. I also run a T 42 P
I have installed all Ecs beta's and Rc1,2 and 3. In every install there was no internet until I manually installed xwlan -- either stand alone *.exe or widget mode. .

Yes, it seems they have trouble getting the widget installed and enabled. It should be in the eCenter's list of available widgets, though.
