For one of my older thinkpads without built in wireless, I had a NetGear 101 for when power isn't a problem, but for traveling and running power from a USB port, I used a DLink WLG-730 which supports 3 different modes of operation. <http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-DWL-G730AP-Wireless-Pocket-802-11g/dp/tech-data/B0002Z45DQ/ref=de_a_smtd/002-0374498-5751232>
I typically only used it in client mode.... i.e. to connect a T23 to the hotel hot spots. Not as an access point for other things to wirelessly connect into (i.e. not hanging off another router that laptops could wireless connect to that network, as opposed to hanging off the wired nic of a laptop in client mode. So I'm not sure if you really meant a portable access point, or really meant client mode. It does support 3 different modes of operation tho...) I did find that in client mode it had limitted functions with VPC in that it couldn't handle traffic to both interfaces at once. If it was just used on the OS/2 side, it was fine. Or if I used SOCKS on the OS/2 side to route all OS/2 traffic looping thru the NIC (before the DLink device) to a socks proxy in the VPC Windows session that then went back out the NIC to the device and out over the net. Later on when I moved up to a T42 with built in wireless, I still found a use for the DLink in client mode as VPC doesn't support the built wireless adapter, but if plugged in the DLink (in client mode) into the hard wired port and dedicated that to the VPC session, then both the OS/2 side (thru the thinkpad built-in adapter)and VPC side (via the Dlink) had network access.

Also, I did find that it was very easy to unexpectedly slide the 3 position switch on the back between "AP" / "Client" / "RT" modes as one pulled if from the travel pack. Sometimes I couldn't figure out why things didn't work, until I looked at the back to see the switch had moved to the "wrong" position.

Anyway, I could post more if interested.

I use a "Linksys Wireless-G Game Adapter" for an older Thinkpad.
