It is true that most systems are moving away from the MAC address end-user registration systems of old. Hopefully, Lothar will get lucky, and it will be a simple plug'n'play setup. I just wanted to prepare him, as the first time I ran into the MAC address issue, I spent no less than two hours staring at the Linksys router trying to figure out why in blazes it couldn't get an address... ;-)

You think that was confusing? I wound up in one case with a Seimens DSL modem
that had to be configured via http://192.168.0.1 and a Netgear router that
required the same address to set up (default).  About the same condition with
cascaded routers, but all I had was wireless (left the cables home) so it was a
Chinese fire drill.
LOL!!
Re-configure the router to a non-default address,
reconnect, reconfigure the router to bridge configuration, set up the DSL
modem, then get the router re-configured.  All while a helpful brother-in-law
leaning over my shoulder "helping".  Then we got to fight the PPOE/PPOA
nonsense.  Made for a fun afternoon of that vacation trip!

Isn't it great when you go on vacation to get *away* from these things, and the relatives always say, "oh, while you're here, I just have something quick for you to check out...?" :-D

I'm dealing with a situation now at a client's field office (we use SuSE 10 workstations, IP phones, and a SonicWALL TZ170 VPN router to connect construction trailers to the main office) where the blasted Westell 6100 DSL bridge ("modem," in Verizon-speak) decided to drop out of bridge mode and revert to factory default (routed-bridge) (and yes, there is indeed a UPS on the power line and a surge suppressor on the telco). I'm having difficulty getting it back into "dumb" mode (won't stick)...

Ain't technology grand? Remember postcards and envelopes, and the oh-so-fantastic two milk cartons and a string??? :-)
