I wound up in one case with a Seimens DSL modem that had to be configured via http://192.168.0.1 and a Netgear router that required the same address to set up (default). About the same condition with cascaded routers, but all I had was wireless (left the cables home) so it was a Chinese fire drill. Re-configure the router to a non-default address, reconnect, reconfigure the router to bridge configuration, set up the DSL modem, then get the router re-configured. All while a helpful brother-in-law leaning over my shoulder "helping". Then we got to fight the PPOE/PPOA nonsense.
