You probably already checked this but seeings as I got bit by it when 
I updated to Dani's 1.8.1/0.4.0 myself I'll ask, is there a dani 
driver on the root of the boot drive?  I had checked /os2 and 
/os2/boot but didn't even think of the root due to 1) I would usually 
never put a file there 2) not recalling that a basedev would read the 
root.
