As mentioned in the links to documents that I posted in my earlier reply, the driver 
levels of the wireless devices are partly an issue. Take my WPC54GS card in the laptop. I 
was at a friend's home whose network I set up. Scanning doesn't show the network since it 
doesn't beacon. I manually configured it under Windows since the scan and select doesn't 
show anything, and it worked. A day later, MS Update tells me they have a newer driver for 
the hardware, I update it and it doesn't work any longer until the Beaconing is turned 
back on, it connects but doesn't aquire an IP address. MS thinks this is progress.
