I might be tempted by using Microsoft's free Virtual PC under XP or
Parallels under Linux.  However, I'm still leaning to a good T43.

So I'm thinking about a replacement system, I prefer a laptop computer
because this enables me to work where I like. Finding a laptop that's
working with OS/2-eCS is hard, unless I buy a (second hand) T40 or T43
I guess. I could also buy a laptop I like and run eCS in a virtual
machine, this way the hardware isn't a problem. I find it hard to make a choice, so I haven't decided yet.

Even Novell is moving toward virtualization. Open Enterprise Server 2 is out now, and the next "version" of NetWare will be purely virtual, running on top of the Linux kernel.

There are pros and cons to virtualization:

   * It's nice to be able to run several virtual servers on one piece
     of hardware;
   * It's nice to be able to reboot a virtualized OS in seconds instead
     of minutes;
   * It's nice to not have to worry about drivers for a plethora of
     OSes, and only for the base one

OTOH:

   * Virtualization tends to under perform a native implementation;
   * Memory requirements for the host and guest OS can lead to several
     constraints (running multiple virtuals on desktop - or notebook -
     hardware can be, well, virtually impossible);
   * One loses out on the stability of the guest OS in lieu of
     accepting the stability (or lack thereof) of the host (NetWare is
     an extremely stable kernel; SuSE is, as well, though I have not
     found it to be as stable as NetWare - I won't go into the
     comparisons between the Windows OS and eCS)

It's a coin toss. I guess it depends upon what hardware you really want, and how much time and effort would need to be expended for a native solution vs virtualization.
