I travel (US, Canada, Europe) a lot and have never had a problem using DHCP.
When the DHCP server sends you an IP it also sends you the subnet mask, router
to use, and domain name server IPs. Since all of the data comes from one place
I would expect it to be correct.
My guess is there is something wrong in your TCP setup.
