Encryption hadn't been enabled before, and that didn't change.

  
I've observed the same behavior as Sandy reports. I have a client where we have WPA2 configured and SSID beaconing turned off. XWLAN keeps searching and can't find the AP...

In this situation, I have found that if I scan for a public hotspot and then tell it to connect to the AP it will generally then do so.

And you mean too "... and if that public hotspot offers DHCP" I presume.

Anyway, here at home I can't get any encrypted connection if the router isn't set to DHCP AND connection is not established through the address(es) the router offers.

Dunno whether this is an XWlan or a driver-system problem, but I'm inclined to believe it's the latter.
