Are you sure you have 8.5GB writable DVDs not 4.7GB ones ? Video DVDs use the larger capacity.
    

double/dual layer DVDs are 2x the capacity of single layer DVDs( 4.7GB ). But, your DVD writer must have/support the double/dual layer capabilities. A good

looks like there are even double sided DVDs too. How about that, 17.1GB for
double/dual layer double sided. whoa.

  
I've never seen double-sided DLs. I've seen double-sided Rs, however, and have even rented a few movies this way (widescreen on one side; 4:3 on the other - Air Force One was like this, IIRC).

If we can do that with 5.25" media, we should be able to get better capacity on the minis, you'd think (have you ever seen mini-DVDs?)...
