You won't be able to write under VPC so that approach won't help.
What kind of failure?
I added this line to help my CD/DVD burns:
PRIORITY_DISK_IO=NO
I would check to see if Lenovo has an updated firmware for the drive.    I've burned DVD+r and DVD-r in my T42 without issue.  I was working with someone the other day who it turned out that he had a problem with a specific model of burner that another model by the same manufacturer was fine.  I have read of people who had problems with certain brands of DVDs with certain models, sometimes corrected by firmware update.  If you can use it under windoze (maybe by swapping it into another machine that has it) you could test the drive itself.
