Za: OS/2 Wireless Users Mailing List <os2-wireless_users@2rosenthals.com>

Greetings...

C'mon Lewis, its not like this list is burning up with questions....this is the most activity for a long time, wireless OS/2 is fairly static both as a topic, list and drivers. You should allow all the wireless topics here.
VPN connections have *nothing* to do with wireless networking under OS/2 and/or eCS.

LinkSys devices are *only* topical to the discussion on this list as they pertain to connecting to them *from* OS/2 and/or eCS machines - wirelessly. The same goes for any other access point device. As one would not connect wirelessly to one of these through a VPN tunnel, such discussions are beyond the scope of this list.

OpenVPN is a particular SSL VPN implementation which has been partially ported to OS/2, first by Pasha, and more recently by Paul Smedley. However, the fact that this has been ported to OS/2 does not make it topical to this list (we'd might as well be discussing SmartSuite or OpenOffice, perhaps relating to connecting to them from across a network).

Stan, you know me well enough to know that I'm no fuddy-dud when it comes to OT discussions on this list, and I have allowed many topics to stray (in truth, I *hate* the thought of moderating this list at all, as I find it contrary to the tenets I set up when I opened my lists in the first place). However, we've discussed this VPN stuff well beyond the limits of tolerance of many members here, and I do not like being pressed by people to "do something" about the OT chatter - especially when they happen to be correct. We have over 200 subscribers to this list from around the globe, and many (still) do not have broadband connections. Thus, they like to keep things as close to "on-topic" as possible.

I've let this VPN stuff go for a while, as usually, OT stuff dies down on its own after a few comments. However, what has been truly, truly annoying about this one is all the thread-jacking which has gone on. I even contributed to it by missing at least one or two subject changes and "OT" or "TOT" prefixes in my changed subjects. This is unfair to the vast majority of subscribers to this list.

Again, I'm happy to set up a new list for general OS/2 networking discussion if there is sufficient interest to warrant a separate list. I don't want to broaden the scope of *this* list, however, as that is not fair to those who *only* subscribe to discuss wireless topics.

In the interim, for those who are interested in discussing this VPN stuff a bit further (and perhaps with a wider audience), the eCS-Technical list on Yahoo is available here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/eCS-Technical/ .

This is all I'm going to say about it, and I beg everyone's indulgence as I breathe (hopefully) the last into this thread. I hope I haven't offended anyone (that was/is surely not my intention), and I hope that we will have more topical conversation coming down the pike (Doug Bisset is doing some good stuff with collecting unsupported drivers which have been reported to work under GenMAC, and Andy has found at least two PC cards which work using the latest CardBus drivers and Veit's cbenable driver).

This OT stuff really needs to wind up. eCS-Technical might be a
good place, or if people want an eCS networking list, we can make
    that happen.
