Hi again...

I just replaced my WRT54G V4 with a WRT54GS V6.  That seems to work.

Can the WRT54G be a wireless extension of the LAN that is currently on the GS?  They can talk to my laptop, can they talk to each other?

If the WRT54G is flashed with DD-WRT it can act as a wireless repeater/bridge. This enables it to:

  1. Act as a client to your existing wireless network (originating
     from your GS);
  2. Broadcast Wi-Fi to other clients, thus extending your wireless range;
  3. Allow wired connections on its four wired switch ports to bridge
     back to the GS for routing to the internet and/or bridging to the
     rest of your network

Nothing should need to be done with your GS to make this happen. Flashing just the WRT54G should be sufficient.

Tips for flashing:

  1. Select the correct version for your hardware (there is a different
     build for the v6 as for the v4, etc.);
  2. The v6 is a bit of a pain (as is the v5). You'll likely have to
     create a custom vx image (see:
     http://dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Linksys_WRT54G/GL/GS/GX#v5_and_v6 );
  3. Start with the micro-generic, as this is a smaller image, and will
     be less likely to result in a "bricked" router;
  4. *If* you think you've bricked the router, don't panic; power it
     off for a couple of minutes before powering it back up - you
     should regain control;
  5. Good tips for the v6:

Other third-party firmware may achieve the same result. I'm just accustomed to working with the DD-WRT stuff these days.

FYI: I sell flashed WRT54GL units (new, and when I have them available, used - it would be disingenuous to say "refurbished"). If you have need of one of these already done, let me know. I also can handle flashing yours, for a small fee plus shipping. It's good experience to do it yourself, however, if you're so inclined.

Lots of good information is available in the DD-WRT wiki: http://dd-wrt.com/wiki .

The reason I use the WRT54GL is that the increased RAM makes it *much* easier to install custom firmware. The VXworks OS which ships on the v5 & v6 (and later, IIRC) has much slimmer memory requirements, thus LinkSys shipped those models with less overall memory, making them more difficult to tweak.
