You may also run into the problem (as I did once) that you cannot unlock the phone unless you know the security code, which is a user-configurable passcode. I once bought a Motorola phone on ebay which was unlockable; I even got the unlock code from T-Mobile; but I lacked the security code, and the ebay vendor didn't get it when he bought the phone from its previous owner.
