Actually, it CAN read HTML.  But, you have to go through:
    Window->View_Message_in_Web_Browser

Having said this [I actually use it when I really WANT] to
read the message, there are significant problems with the
HTML interpretation and all formatting does not work.
In particular, almost all images are omitted from the HTML
message.

So, while I saw nothing in the Text-View of the HTML message,
viewing it in my browser did reveal the URL.
