Well, I had a complete suite of PalmOS apps for my
NZ90, which I managed to make work nicely with OS/2.
And to bring it all back OT, I even managed to hook my
old Palm device up via WiFi as a remote drive.
But that baby does not offer any phone connectivity
and the browser just sucks on the Internet.
No more driver updates and Palms last devicem the Treo
650, came completely w/o WiFi!!!
So I want to be able to port the max of my Palm apps,
and those are not just Office Readers, but complete
suites that allow me to compose MS Office compatible
documents, including database & server SW.
Terminal programs, ftp suites (not just a simple cmd
line interface), ftp & HTML servers, PDF & PS creators
and very sophisitcated paint programs.
In short, a PC "replacements" for times when I just
don't want to lugg my laptop around with me.
Now when I read the test report about that
Sony/Ericson phone they specifically mentioned that
that new Symbian OS was still short on apps, and e.g.
just being able to view some MS office docs falls far
short of what I'm now able to do on my Palm.
Heck, I can compile a whole power point presentation
and cut my own videos to go with that.
I know that ~80-90% of those apps have a Windoze
version.
If Palm wouldn't have messed up their Treo so badly, I
would have stayed with Palm.
But I made my bad experiences with 3rd party PDA
add-ons to get WiFi working where the manufacturer had
decided it should not be implemented. So no thankz.
And then I found a Windozw phone with WiFi, Bluetooth,
Video Streaming, TV & recording PAL/NTSC/SECAM and
then some.
What can I say? The best Symbian version for that I
could find was the Nokia phone and that doesn't even
have a keyboard or a touch screen.
And the keyboard for the Sony/Ericson is a joke, yet
the touch screen there is so small that it would leave
almost no space for display.
That other phone has a big enough touch screen that
you can use on-screen keys, but it also has some
decent hard keys.
What can I say, I spend two days looking and in the
end there just aren't enough Symbian apps to allow me
to use it as a full fledged PC replacement when I'm
out in the field.
I have over 8GB in database files in PDA format.
Not to mention my speech translators...
Jeez, I have a gig upcoming in Malaysia and w/o my
translator they'll likely drive me to the red light
district rather than to the hotel ;-)
