Well, that was part of the problem: ignorant me was trying "peer (ad hoc)"
instead of "public hotspots".

Why? Because the LAN is Peer and my WiFi is not public -- it's inaccessible
unless your MAC address is on the "OK" list.  I guess it's now "public" the
same way the inside of private businesses are.  "Public" has changed its
meaning to about the diametric opposite of what I learned in the '50s. I still
have trouble getting used to it.

Still no success, however. I select the correct SSID from a surprisingly long
list and click "connect" but get no confirmation or denial -- just silence and
no popups.

I assume it's supposed to tell me if it connects?
