I've often wondered how the name came to be, but never ran across an
explanation.
"The goal of the Subversion project is to build a version control system
that is a compelling replacement for CVS in the open source community. The
software is released under an Apache/BSD-style open source license."
I suspect the name was invented by a non-native English speaker who did
not understand the ideomatic implications, or perhaps he/she did. :-)
