(In response to you and Mark, both): Up until the era of the T23 or so, the mPCI slot would have contained a modem/NIC combo. By the time the T23 was released (and I'm generalizing as to the rest of the industry, but this is a fairly good point of reference: 2002?), many notebooks were shipping with CDC's (Communications Daughter Cards) which included the modem and NIC on a half-mPCI-sized board, leaving the mPCI slot free for Wi-Fi (or perhaps, something else). Looking over this thread again, Mark, you mention this is a P4 notebook, so I would have to guess that it post-dates the T23 (which was a PIII machine), so it is entirely possible that there is an available mPCI slot in it. I do not know how non-IBM (okay, Hitachi) manufacturers handled the slot in non-Wi-Fi-ready models. Presumably, they used a modem-only CDC and an mPCI NI, or left the CDC connector empty and used the older style combo cards. If this is the case, perhaps a switch to a CDC board would be in order along with a GenMAC-supported mPCI 802.11 card. In any event, sounds like a fun project. Unfortunately, besides income tax season, this whole DST shift thing has crept up on me, with new patches released just this past week (Novell GroupWise), and firmware the week before (SonicWALL Standard and Enhanced). I've pretty much got my hands full...!
