Hi (again), Al...

I've been happily running as a guest under VirtualBox 6.1.40 since 2022.  However, it always reminds me that 7.1.6 is available, but I've been reluctant to rock a well working boat.  What's the advantage or disadvantage of either version under Windoze 11 host?

7.1 seems more stable than 7.0 (which seemed less stable than later 6.1.x). Of course, much of this depends upon how you have the guest configured. You should note the recommendations and procedures on the Arca Noae site (as we have actually tested and benchmarked some of this stuff):

https://www.arcanoae.com/wiki/arcaos/installation-planning/virtual-machine-configuration/oracle-vm-virtualbox/

For ArcaOS, in general, you will want a minimum of 1GB RAM, (1) CPU, IDE (not AHCI or NVMe), and avoid EFI (no need for it).

The only "problems" I've had since 2022 are:
* shared folders sometimes show shared host file timestamps in the Guest as GMT times for a while, then magically start displaying in the local timezone. And when that happens, if I create a file on the shared folder with the guest it appears at GMT time in the guest but the host displays it correctly in local time.  But restarting VirtualBox or just waiting a while the issue cures itself.
* pretty good luck with the PCNet-Fast III adapter except that Net Used drives (or even a massive FTP) run out of resources after a lot of copying and then resume working again if I pause for about 10 minutes and then retry the operation.

Will an upgrade fix any of this or just cause new problems?

Hard to say about the shared folder situation. You might want to check in the VBox forums, as I'm not sure if that's a guest-side issue or a host-side issue, either of which may have been addressed in the latest releases (Arca Noae recommends Samba vs shared folders, but clearly shared folders can be easier to set up). Some others here have had more experience with shared folders than I, so hopefully, someone will chime in.

We also generally recommend one of the Intel NIC emulations vs the PCNet, although we (Arca Noae) have a large enterprise client where we had to use PCNet to resolve an odd condition on the network. In that case, the minor performance hit was a small price to pay for consistent connectivity (I don't recall the specifics of the issue offhand, but I do know that I was surprised by the report). In your case, however, I would probably switch to the Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop and see if that addresses your out-of-resources condition (and I do not recall seeing that in any of our test setups using the Intel adapter).

Hopefully some others will be able to fill in some gaps which I may have missed in my overview.

HTH
