Actually, unplugging it may not be the best thing to do. When you
unplug it, you disconnect it from the ground, which is supposed to help
to protect against such things. The bottom line is that if you are
going to be "hit by lightening", you may, or may not, have damage
whether you are unplugged, or not. FWIW, I don't think this incident
had anything to do with being plugged in, or lightening (nothing else
was damaged), it was just time for something in the PSU to die, so it
did. Of course, it just had to pick a most inconvenient time to do it
